Two years ago today, my life was forever changed by the sound of YOU crying as they placed your slippery body on my chest. You looked directly into my tear filled eyes as I held you in disbelief. Your Daddy and I kept saying, “He’s ours! Can you believe it! He’s finally here!”

The two years before you were born, our hearts were heavy and longed for a baby. After two miscarriages, I started to accept and embrace that God’s plan for us to become parents might look different than I had expected. I had no idea how it would all play out.

THE BROKEN ROAD

Two weeks after our second miscarriage Eric was diagnosed with testicular cancer. I can remember the numb feeling that came over my entire body when the doctor told us that surgery was necessary. Our entire mindset changed in an instant as we realized that our focus needed to be on getting Eric well. One night while we were lying in bed just a few days before the surgery, I told Eric that maybe God was allowing this because we weren’t supposed to have biological children. Eric said that it might God’s plan or maybe God was allowing this trial so that when we did have our own children HE would get all of the glory. Eric reminded me of Gideon’s army in the Bible and how God may be reducing our army as well. After surgery our chances of conceiving were literally cut in half.

You can imagine the shock when TWO pink lines appeared on the pregnancy test only 3 weeks after Eric had the cancerous testicle removed. We both laughed out loud as I dreamed about the possibility of a baby in 9 months. With my history of miscarriages I was obviously NERVOUS and was monitored closely throughout the first and second trimester.

THE MOST WONDERFUL SOUND IN THE WORLD

It was rather humorous those first few months of pregnancy. Eric was feeling the effects of the radiation killing any cancer cells that may have been left behind and I was feeling the effects of my body nourishing your tiny life. We both spent the evenings on the couch exhausted and nauseous. One thing was for sure, we were thankful. We had our first ultrasound scheduled when I was six weeks pregnant with you. We waited as the doctor started to examine me with the ultrasound machine. It was so quiet I thought I could hear my own heart beating until the doctor said, ‘That’s the sound of your baby’s heart beating.” He pointed to your tiny heart as it pumped blood through your body. Your daddy and I both started to cry as we heard a sound we had never heard before…the sound of OUR baby’s heart. You’re heart.

FOREVER CHANGED

Two and a half years later our house is filled with the sound of your sweet voice singing the Firetruck song or laughing as we all wrestle on the floor. I love that Daddy is your best friend and you love emulating everything he does. I love the way you still cuddle me in the mornings as we watch Sesame Street and sing the Elmo song together. Your name means rest and comfort NOAH PAUL You have brought us much comfort and although I am more tired than I have ever been in my life, my heart finally rests. Thank you for changing our lives! We love you more than words can express Noah. God will use your story to bring Glory to Himself. It is my prayer that you will seek HIM and follow HIM all the days of your life.

One month as a mama of two!

We are still here and doing well. I think I forgot how hard it is to live on little to no sleep, but we are hanging in there. Kate is a sweet baby and doing very well. She had her 1 month check-up this morning and weighed 10 lbs 8 oz. She is in the 90th percentile for weight and height. She can be fussy at feeding time, but other than that, she is very mellow and easy. Noah is a great big brother and has adjusted quickly to his new role. He learned how to give Cake (his name for her) her pacifier and then proceeded to do a 1 minute celebration dance while singing, "I DID IT!". We love our little family and are so thankful for God's gifts to us!

37 weeks

With my friend Cole who is due any day!

I am officially full term and officially uncomfortable! I am ready for this baby girl to come! My wonderful friends threw me a sweet shower last Saturday. I was blessed with the most adorable little girl clothes! Washing and putting away all of her new goodies made me so excited to meet her. My friend Katie had been planning on hosting my shower at her house but the shower had to be moved after her son came down with a nasty stomach flu the morning of the event. My friend Megan stepped up and with only a few hours preparation, had the shower at her house. Megan put up a few pictures of what Katie had been planning to decorate with. So creative and cute! I seriously couldn't have felt more loved by the efforts of both Katie, Megan, and all of my friends who helped and attended. Thank you ladies! On another note, our doula will be out of town the 19th through the 30th, so PLEASE pray that this little one decides to come before the 18th! I have a doctor's appointment this Friday so we'll see if any progress has been made. Thanks in advance for your prayers.

36 weeks

I guess I can say that I am officially in the home stretch! I am 36 weeks according to an early ultrasound, but after my calculations as well as the fact that the little one measured almost a week ahead at our 31 week ultrasound, I am guessing that I am closer to 37 weeks. We had an interesting week to say the least, but we are happy to report that the baby is doing great!

I was covering for my partner teacher last Tuesday at school when I starting feeling "weird". I felt nauseous and dizzy and was having contractions that were pretty uncomfortable. It was also a scorching 100 degrees in SLO. Not what my body was used to or liked. After trying to lay down and see if I felt better, I decided that I needed to go home to Los Osos where I was sure to get some relief from the heat. I kept Noah at daycare and thought I'd take a nap. As I was driving home, I started to feel even more nausea. Luckily I made it into my house before I "lost" everything I had eaten that day. I laid down and no matter what position I was in, I was having lots of "uncomfortable"contractions. I tried to eat or drink but couldn't.

On my 12 minute drive to the babysitters house to pick up Noah, I counted 3 strong contractions and realized that maybe they were becoming more regular. By 6:45 I was feeling horrible and having contractions every 5 minutes. I decided to call my doctor. He said it would be a good idea to go to Labor and Delivery and get checked out. I threw some things in a bag while Eric got Noah ready for bed. Our dear friend Holly came over and we set out for the hospital. When we got there, the nurse got all the monitors set up and sure enough I was having regular contractions and some that I had to breath through. The nurse checked me and I was 1 cm. The doctor had the nurse give me IV fluids to see if re-hydrating me would stop the contractions. We waited about an hour, and although the intensity of the contractions slowed down, I was still having them. They decided to give me a shot of Terbutaline to make sure the contractions stopped. The shot worked and after a few hours of observation we were able to go home.

I had a doctor's appt. and Non-Stress Test on Thursday. The baby looked great and my contractions had stopped. I was also starting to feel better from the stomach flu I must have had. The doctor checked me again and I was 2cm. He said the baby may come early, but at this point I am far enough along that they won't stop labor.

We are so excited to meet our little girl, but I am hoping that she stays put for at least another week.

We had another ultrasound today with the specialist and everything looks great. The doctor said our baby girl looks perfect. He said that she is "above average" size at 4 lbs. She has assumed the "head down" position too. Yikes! I have plenty of amniotic fluid and because of the size of the baby, he said my placenta is functioning perfectly. Praise God! I am borderline for having APA, but with both pregnancies, my body hasn't shown any signs at all! The doctor even said he doesn't need to see me again. We got a few good looks at her in the ultrasound but unfortunately she wouldn't cooperate when the doc decided to get a few pictures. As far as I could tell, she looks like Noah, but who knows! I truly can't believe that in a matter of weeks our family will be expanding. I am so thankful and cannot wait to meet this little one.

Here are a few pics of Noah within the last month. He is talking so much and it seems like he learns a new word every other day. He is like a sponge and I am really enjoying this age. We are all getting ready for our baby girl to arrive. Eric is drafting a plan for a closet organizer and I am getting ready to incorporate a few "girl" elements to the room that she and Noah will share. I am saying "she" and "her" because as of now, we haven't decided on a name. I have a few that I like, but nothing that has grabbed me yet. We are also thinking we may keep the name a secret until she is here. It's always fun to have some element of surprise. I am feeling more connected to her and a few nights ago a feeling of love came over me as I felt her moving inside of me. It has taken a lot longer to connect with this pregnancy than it did with Noah, but I am slowly starting to feel a sense of anticipation for our little girl to come and join our family. Only 18 more weeks!

GIRL!!!

We had our ultrasound yesterday and found out that we indeed have a healthy baby girl. I had a feeling that the baby was a she, but I still felt very shocked when the doctor confirmed my suspicions. We feel so blessed to have the opportunity to parent both a boy and a girl. I had a few panic moments yesterday as I thought about raising a girl and the responsibility that would be, but after sleeping on it last night, I woke up almost giddy with excitement. I can't wait for the adorable girl clothes and accessories, and more importantly, the unique relationship that I hope to have with my daughter some day. I know that just like raising a boy to become a man of God, raising a daughter in the Lord will be equally challenging. Thank goodness we don't have to do it alone. Now it's time to ask the Lord for her name and get ready!

Highlights from August and September

Noah with his cousin Asher in Noah's new monkey big boy chair.

We have been busy around the Soderin house. We celebrated Noah's first birthday with our friends and family over Labor Day weekend. Noah got to meet his cousin Sophia from Oregon for the first time and he got to play with his cousin Asher too! We ate a lot, laughed a lot, and enjoyed the blessings of our children. I started teaching 2 days a week and it has been a blast. I haven't felt this tired in along time though. Noah is doing well at daycare, and I am so thankful for the care he is getting there. Oh, a shout out to Eric who just earned his contractor's license. We are very proud of him! Noah is talking/yelling up a storm and he is perfecting his tantrums. His favorite thing to yell is da da. The other day he was in the bathroom while I was getting ready for school. He started to flush the toilet and I said, "No Noah". He looked at me and shook his head no. Then he signed please. I thought it was the cutest thing ever. Needless to say, he didn't get to flush the toilet.

It Only Took a Year

Well, I FINALLY finished Noah's room. I am only a week shy of his first birthday. My beautiful friend Katie sketched and painted the perfect tree in Noah's room. It is exactly what I envisioned it to be. Thanks so much Katie!

We've had a fun and full summer with two trips to Tahoe, lots of beach days, and too many wonderful memories to list. Noah just finished swim lessons on Friday, and I start school on Tuesday. Noah has been doing great at daycare, and I am very excited to use another part of my brain and get back into teaching. Here are some pics of the tree and a group shot of Noah with his buddies at swim lessons. Oh, I also included a pic of Noah with his Texas gal Ava.

A Long Overdue Update

Noah is now 9 months old and as cute as ever. He is saying mama, dada, baba, and of course shaking his no when he doesn't like something. We are having so much fun with our little boy. He is keeping me busy following me all around the house and pulling up on anything and everything. His favorite food is probably turkey or chicken, and he only wants to feed himself now. Hmm, I wonder where he gets that independent attitude. We are looking forward to our first "official" family vacation to my parent's cabin in South Lake Tahoe. Gramie and Grandpie will be joining us for part of our stay and Eric and I are looking forward to having some dates and maybe playing a game or two of blackjack. We also get to see Alison Krauss and Robert Plant live at Harrah's outdoor venue. Pictures to follow as soon as we get back! Here are some recent pics of Noah in the meantime. Enjoy!

5 years with my Best Friend

Eric and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary yesterday. When I reflect on what we have experienced together these past 5 years, my heart is filled with praise, thanksgiving, and joy for what God has done. There have been both times of blessings and times of trials, but I truly believe that it has made our marriage stronger and our friendship deeper. I wouldn't want to go through this life with anyone else. Eric is an amazing husband and the father every child dreams of. I love you Eric and can't wait to celebrate 70 more years with you as your wife.

Eric, today in the presence of God and these witnesses, I commit myself to you as your wife, your encourager and your best friend. Because the Lord is the source of all that is perfect, I promise to continually seek Him as the giver of my love for you. I promise to be your helper and supporter that I may comfort you in times of sorrow and share with you joy in times of gladness. 8 Months New

This has been quite the week of milestones for Noahroo. He turned 8 months old on the 1st of May. He cut 2 teeth making the grand total of pearly whites 5 so far. He also started crawling AND he can now pull himself to a standing position in his crib. I cannot believe how fast he is growing. I know I've said it in previous posts, but this little guy has stolen our hearts completely.

Road Trip

We just got back from the OC on Monday night after visiting our new nephew Asher. He is such a mellow little guy and oh so cute. We ate at In & Out two times in 3 days and found out that french fries are Noah's new favorite food. We had a great time and are overjoyed for Peter and Angi. Noah is a great traveler too!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Easter with our family. We had an amazing dinner consisting of lamb, asparagus, raviolis, salad and rolls paired with great wines and a yummy berry cheesecake for dessert. The best part of the entire weekend was watching our parents and grandma love on Noah. He is such a good boy and our hearts are filled with love for him. God's sacrifice of his son Jesus is more real to me now more than ever as I look at my own child. Our Father in Heaven truly made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you Jesus!

Men who do housework may get more sex

American men still don't pull their weight when it comes to housework and child care, but collectively they're not the slackers they used to be. The average dad has gradually been getting better about picking himself up off the sofa and pitching in, according to a new report in which a psychologist suggests the payoff for doing more chores could be more sex.
The report, released Thursday by the Council on Contemporary Families, summarizes several recent studies on family dynamics. One found that men's contribution to housework had doubled over the past four decades; another found they tripled the time spent on child care over that span.
"More couples are sharing family tasks than ever before, and the movement toward sharing has been especially significant for full-time dual-earner couples," the report says. "Men and women may not be fully equal yet, but the rules of the game have been profoundly and irreversibly changed."
Some couples have forged partnerships they consider fully equitable.
"We'll both talk about how we're so lucky to have someone who does more than their share," said Mary Melchoir, a Washington-based fundraiser for the National Organization for Women, who — like her lawyer husband — works full-time while raising 6-year-old triplets.
"He's the one who makes breakfast and folds the laundry," said Melchoir, 47. "I'm the one who fixes things around the house."
Joshua Coleman, a San Francisco-area psychologist and author of "The Lazy Husband: How to Get Men to Do More Parenting and Housework," said equitable sharing of housework can lead to a happier marriage and more frequent sex.
"If a guy does housework, it looks to the woman like he really cares about her — he's not treating her like a servant," said Coleman, who is affiliated with the Council on Contemporary Families. "And if a woman feels stressed out because the house is a mess and the guy's sitting on the couch while she's vacuuming, that's not going to put her in the mood."
The report's co-authors, sociologists Scott Coltrane of the University of California, Riverside and Oriel Sullivan of Ben Gurion University, said they were addressing a perception that women's gains in the workplace were not being matched by gains at home.
"The typical punch line of many news stories has been that even though women are working longer hours on the job and cutting back their own housework, men are not picking up the slack," Coltrane and Sullivan wrote.
They said this perception was based on unrealistic expectations and underestimated the degree of change "going on behind the scenes" since the 1960s. The change, they said, "is too great a break from the past to be dismissed as a slow and grudging evolution."
Among the findings they cited:
_In the U.S., time-use diary studies show that since the '60s, men's contribution to housework doubled from about 15 percent to more than 30 percent of the total. Over the same period, the average working mother reduced her weekly housework load by two hours.
_Between 1965 and 2003, men tripled the amount of time they spent on child care. During the same period, women also increased the time spent with their children, suggesting mutual interest in a more hands-on approach to child-raising.
Sullivan and Coltrane predict men's contributions will increase further as more women take jobs.
"Men share more family work if their female partners are employed more hours, earn more money and have spent more years in education," they said.
Pamela Smock, a University of Michigan sociologist who also works with the council, said a persistent gender gap remains for what she called "invisible" household work — scheduling children's medical appointments, buying the gifts they take to birthday parties, arranging holiday gatherings, for example.
Marriage equality is more elusive among blacks than whites, with black women shouldering a relatively higher burden in terms of child care and housework, said council collaborator Shirley Hill, a sociology professor at the University of Kansas.
The report's overall findings meshed with what Carol Evans, founder and CEO of Working Mother magazine, has been observing as she tracks America's two-income couples.

"There's a generational shift that's quite strong," she said. "The younger set of dads have their own expectations about themselves as to being helpful and participatory. They haven't quite gotten to equality in any sense that a women would say, 'Wow, that's equal,' but they've gotten so much farther down the road."

My little man

Noah has gotten so big! He is now sleeping in his own crib and is eating rice cereal at night. He even knows how to use a sippy cup! I just can't believe how fast he is growing. He has quite the personality and loves to laugh and coo. Last night Eric and I were talking about what it is going to be like on his first day of kindergarten. I started to tear up just thinking about it. For now, I am just going to cherish every second of every day with my little man beacause just like everyone has said, it goes by way too fast.

I know it's been awhile since my last post. We have been so busy with Noah the past 3 weeks. Right after his 1 month appointment, he got a virus in his tummy and was very sick. Right when Noah started feeling better, he got colic. Those of you parents who have had colicky babies can empathize. I have cut almost everything out of my diet that may or may not hurt his tummy. Although my food these days is bland, I have never eaten so healthy in my life. I guess I will count it as a blessing in disguise. When Noah's tummy isn't hurting him, he is so sweet and happy. He loves going on walks in the morning with Eric which allows me a few extra minutes of sleep. Thanks daddy! He can hold up his head and loves to smile. We are loving our little guy more and more every day. Even through the sleepless nights and days spent bouncing and rocking while the laundry heap grows bigger and bigger, we are so thankful for our baby and the new calling we have on our lives as parents.

Bathtime

Noah had his first bath in the big bathtub a few nights ago. Eric did the honors of getting in the bathtub with him while I washed Noah. Both the boys loved this so much, I have to admit that I was a little jealous. We are loving our little boy so much and are really blessed that he is such a good baby. Thank you Lord!
Quick question for all of those moms out there: When do you find time to eat?

I am still trying to figure this whole "blog" thing out. Now that I am a Mom, I actually feel like I may have something profound to say......we'll see. If not, I may ask my friend Holly to blog on my behalf.
